What is Intercultural Community Building ?
In Japan(Kanagawa Prefecture as well), the number of foreign nationals such as students, workers, and their families is increasing. However, living in Japan, many tend to face difficulties coping with the institutional as well as emotional barriers. We aim to create a harmonious society where people in the community understand the problems of these people, where their human rights are protected, and where rich cultural exchanges may take place.
Our Activities
First of all, we need to know about the people from different cultures living in our community, get correct information, interact with them, and together try to come up with a solution if there are any problems. Then, we may also need to work on policy issues. We have given lectures inviting foreign nationals as guest speakers and seminars to know about the organizations that support foreign nationals. We have also held “Multicultural Dialogue Café” in a certain community and had residents gather and talk. We also conducted fieldtrips to visit and learn about multicultural communities. “Colorful World,” our Mail Magazine for Multicultural Community Building, which we publish monthly, is a good tool to have the readers become interested in the issues, and to know about different events and information in Kanagawa Prefecture.
